WE'RE FINE. IT'S FINE.

Eeeeeeeeeverything's fine.

HOW WE FEEL EVERY TIME WE WATCH THE NEWS THESE DAYS.*

BUT, after much scientific research & countless studies, we've discovered that if you keep your television & Twitter turned OFF & your attention turned ON to your dog, things really do seem fine. In fact, better than fine...our canine compadres have a funny way of doing that for us humans.

Aaaanyway, a lot of exciting things going on around WDU -
we continue to grow (stay tuned for some exciting introductions soon!),
we've added a new location for puppy classes AND we only have a few remaining spots open for March/April classes!

*In all seriousness, we are not trying to make light of current events, we are just trying to bring you five minutes of distraction via useful training info., witty one-liners (that we grant you full permission to claim as your own) & if nothing else - our amazing, happy, silly, joyful, brilliant wonderful Wonder Doggos.

MYTH BUSTERS

The Legend of St. Pat's Pups

The legend of the famous Irishman and his dogs is one you may not have heard before...When he was 16, Patrick was captured by Irish marauders. For six years he was enslaved with only a dog for companionship. One day he had a dream that his favorite sheepdog, told him to escape to a ship that was over 200 miles away—the ship was filled with Irish Wolfhounds. He decided to follow this dream and escaped. Arriving at the ship, Patrick's pleas to come aboard were refused—until someone noticed that he had a calming effect on the feisty Irish canine cargo. So they let him on in exchange for some dog caring and training. Eventually, the ship crashed upon the shore of Gaul and the men and dogs soon were starving. Patrick prayed all night & in the morning a herd of wild pigs magically appeared from the forest, and he quickly set the hounds on them. After about twenty years spent on the continent, Patrick decided to go back to Ireland. Upon landing on the Emerald shores, he was met by an Irish prince, out hunting with his Wolfhound. The prince put his hound on attack, but when the dog lunged for Patrick, Patrick uttered a few words and the dog went into an immediate down-stay and licked his outstretched hand. (The Bark)

FAST FACTS

Holy Slit

No, we did not just misspell a curse word, we are actually referring to those little things on either side of a dog's nose - the slits. These otherwise underwhelming appearing parts of a pup's nose work as an air filter of sorts. When dogs exhale through their noses, the slits filter out the air without letting the scents out. Crazy right?! If you think that's crazy, hold on to your butts because we're just getting started. A dog can even tell which side of its nose is taking in a specific scent. 🤯 This is how they're able to track and locate specific smells (like search and rescue dogs). But they don't stop there, these tiny miracle workers can even detect cancer cells, oncoming seizures and panic attacks. For perspective: a human can distinguish up to roughly 10,000 scents while Lassie can smell upwards of 100,000! Put that in your pipe and smoke it. This slit is bananas. 🍌

Stop & Sniff the Roses

Last month we suggested ways to add a little enrichment to your canine counterparts' lives. One idea included walking your pup down a different street in your neighborhood, or along a new path in the park, to give him something new to sniff. This seemingly simple act of sniffing has more health benefits for doggos than you may realize. So, the next time you start to feel the urge to hurry Fluffy's sniff-fest along - consider all the benefits your pup is getting & who knows... you may find yourself stopping to smell the roses more often.

A PUP NAMED PEGGY

Weighing in at a whopping 3-ish lbs. (closer to 4 when soaking wet) under all this fabulous fluff is Peggy, a Bernedoodle and the star of her own Instagram account @apupnamedpeggy. The soon-to-be Puppy Preschool graduate's happy-go-lucky nature and winning confidence helped coax shyer pups in class out of their shells while reminding the more boisterous ones to tone it down for their pint-sized playmates.
