SUMMERTIME & THE LIVIN'S...

hot.

IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A DOG, IT'S A DOG IN A BIRD BATH

Well, that's one way to beat the heat. Unfortunately, Tweety Bird isn't so fond of fur balls in her bathtub, not to mention there are better ways to keep Bluey from overheating in the summer - just keep reading. From the hot temps to the beach, keeping our pet dogs safe during the long summer months should take top priority and we tell you just what to be on the lookout for, so that you can be fetch while playing...er, fetch. And yes, we're making that happen.

NOT TO MENTION

We're attacking allergies with dog breeds, talking beach etiquette, answering the age-old question of happiness and introducing you to Hank, the Floof Tank. Plus, new grad pics are up (see them here!) So grab a nice, cold bevvy, crank that A/C and settle in for some good old fashioned Wonderful dog-related content.

MYTH BUSTERS

Dog breeds to appease allergies & how to
AH-CHOOse

Despite popular belief, not everything you read on the internet is true and no one is more saddened by this than pet allergy sufferers (which make up a whopping 30% of all allergy sufferers!). We blame big Kleenex. So, are hypoallergenic dog breeds just a moth ball in myth's clothing?

THE 📠 :

Pet allergies aren't just found in the fur. They are also quite common with people who have asthma or other allergies, and they can be triggered by proteins in a dog’s saliva, urine or dander. Most commonly seen in cosmetics and textiles, “hypoallergenic” refers to something that is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. However the possibility for allergic reaction, while low, still remains.

QUICK TIPS

Dog-friendly beach tips

Do your summer vacay plans include a coastal getaway or oceanside stay? Whatever adventures await you this summer, it's always more fun when Pluto comes along. Before following your nose to the sweet smell of the salt air, follow your eyeballs to keep reading for a few tips on making this beach trip almost as unforgettable as that junior year spring break trip.

RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BEACH SURF: Not all dog-friendly beaches are created equal and in the wrong unfur-iendly beach town, it can cost you in fines and tickets. From designated dog-free hours to leash laws and license requirements, every beach is different. Find out before you go what the rules are and plan accordingly.

DON'T BE A BEACH: Yes, beach etiquette is a thing. Never heard of her? Allow us... While that beach you're visiting may be considered "dog friendly," the fastest way to make it unfriendly is to assume everyone there finds your pup as stinking cute as you do. (For the record, they are stinking cute.) But, strange as it seems, there are real human people who prefer their beach stays sans leftover dog poo or unprovoked (and unleashed) sand traps with a case of the zoomies popping by to lift a leg on their beach chair.

DON'T BE SALTY: While humans may have an entire food group dedicated to salt, too much of it can be a very bad thing for your pooch... and your dog.😉 Saltwater poisoning can be fatal, according to the AKC, "[Saltwater] can lead to deadly amounts of fluid around the brain, inflammation, and gastric ulcers and hemorrhages.” Be sure to pack plenty of that high quality H2O to keep Pluto from guzzling the ocean.

PAW PATROL: Spoiler alert: the sand gets hot. While it's funny when others bust out an impromptu "Sands So Hot" two-step, it's way less funny when we do it ourselves. But no one finds it less amusing than pups with twice the number of feet to burn. Luckily, there's a shoe for that.

FAST FACTS 🤯

Because I'm happy

When researchers scanned the brains of human mothers, who had both a baby and a dog for more than two years, they found they both activated the brain’s reward centers in equal amounts.

What's more, dogs rely on their emotional attachment to bond with us as well. Animal cognition scientists at Emory University have trained dogs to lie still while giving them MRIs. When researchers presented canines with odors of other dogs, food, and their humans, it was the scent of their humans that the dogs prioritized over everything else and got them the most excited. Now, who's cutting those onions?! 🥹

Ok, he's ready now.

Ok, he's ready now.

This sweet smiling ball of fur is Hank. Always down for a good cuddle sesh and never one to pass on playtime, Hank is just pleased to please. As a member of our puppy classes, we've watched this floof goof go from not-so-tiny fluff to a giant gentle tank. While we were busy tending to our melting hearts Hank was busy learning good boi stuff - to sit, to walk calmly on a leash and even managed a few tricks.

"You can't help but smile every time you see this guy roll up to class. He takes every class by storm! Watching Hank progress through puppy school has been nothing short of a blast." -- The WDU Team

"Hanks paw-rents sure lucked out! What a great boi they have!" -- Hank
