Alas, the holidays will be here before we know it, but before they come parading into town, it's time for your monthly dose of canine wisdom and training truths. This month, we celebrate new Wonder grads (you should see the photos!) we dive into crucial advice for new puppy owners, shedding light on what not to do during those early weeks. We also cover counter surfing so your counters can stay...errr covered this Thanksgiving. We also cover probably the most important topic to date: Setting some ground rules for house guests coming to visit for the holidays. You've trained your pup, now it's time to train your in-laws. OK, who's got the champagne?

House rules for holiday hooligans

Let’s be honest - the house really belongs to the dog. They just let us live in it. So when the dog allows you to have guests visit for the holidays, make sure they (your human visitors) are on their best behavior, because, after all -- Fido’s house, Fido’s rules. We made it as easy as download, print, hang on fridge.

QUICK TIPS

So you want to be a puppy parent

Believe it or not, the early weeks with a new puppy require a little more than just cuddles and playtime. In fact, these weeks are crucial for your pup's well-being and while advice may pour in from all directions, here are few things NOT to do.

DON'T SKIMP ON THE SOCIALS
We're not referring to the social networks (there's really no such thing as too many puppy pics) but the same applies to in person socialization and not just your own social calendar of events to show off your new cuddle puddle, it also applies to your puppy's socialization. The first three months shape your puppy's future. Socialize them positively with various experiences, from meeting new people and dogs to encountering different sounds and surfaces. Move at their pace, and associate each new encounter with praise or treats.

DON'T BE THAT PUPPY PARENT
We all know those "the cool parents" — the ones that allow their kids to do whatever they want "as long it's under their roof." Well, we've got news for new puppy-parents: being cool isn't worth it. Unsupervised freedom can lead to bathroom accidents and destructive behavior. Puppy-proof your space, and always supervise. Use crate training or baby gates to create a safe area. Only grant unsupervised freedom when potty behavior is controlled and chewing habits are appropriate.

DON'T BE INCONSISTENT
Dogs thrive on routine. Establish a schedule for meals, walks and playtime to minimize confusion and stress. It's also essential that the humans in the house are consistent with ground rules and manners. Ensure everyone in the household follows the same set of rules to avoid conflicting expectations.

Remember, it's never too early to reward for desired behaviors. Start teaching basic manners and skills from day one. Embrace positive training methods to build a strong bond and prevent unwanted behaviors. Harsh methods can erode your bond—focus on rewarding positive behaviors and providing alternatives.

HENRY THE FIRST

Story books only ever tell you about the human Henry(s) that have made history, but here's one fluffy Henry that is sure to go down in history... laying down. Although his kingdom be small, he is a king of the people. And boy is it good to be king. His humans succumb to his every need and in return he rewards them with good boi behavior and lots of cuddles.

PAWNOTE: Henry would like you to know he isn't gravity-challenged or even lazy. He just really prefers lying down to standing up.

“Henry's been such a motivated and happy A+ student in classes. We can always tell he and mom have been doing their homework together and show up ready to dazzle.”
