WHAT IS THIS? THE FOUR SEASONS?

Ahhh September. Summer weather, fall vibes. Despite whatever kitchy marketing term you use to refer to the September season - Spooky, Pumpkin Spice or Virgo Season, heck even Gilmore Girls has become a season - as of late, September has become known as the start of Cuffing Season. But here at Wonder Dog University we're putting cuffing season out to pasture and getting ready for Floofing Season! If you're like us and prefer dogs to humans 96% of the time, September is the perfect time to stay in and cuddle with your dog - hence, Floofing Season! So whether you're adding a new puppy to your family, or settling in with your senior pup, WDU is here to help with all your dog training and Floofing Season needs.

QUICK TIPS

Potty etiquette & other dog psychology facts

There are two kinds of people in this world: those that look away when their dog does their business (Can I get a little privacy here?!) and there are those that don't break eye contact (Creepers, y'all know who you are). But, what about what your dog wants? We asked 100 dogs this very question and here's what they said. Just kidding. Dogs can't talk.

🤧GESUNDHEIT! Dogs may sneeze when they're play-fighting to show that they're just playing around and that they don't actually want to hurt you.

😍 HEART EYES Dogs can fall in love. When a dog looks at their best friend and person, their brain releases a hormone called oxytocin, also known as the love hormone.

🥱 KEEP CALM & YAWN Dogs yawn in order to reduce stress and anxiety, which helps them calm down and remain comfortable. If only that worked for us humans. Oh wait, it does.

💩 DO YOUR DOODY It's thought that if your dog looks deeply into your eyes right before they poop, it means they feel vulnerable and they trust you to keep an eye out for them.

Sprechen sie doggo?

If you're like us, you spend a lot of time with your dog (like...a lot) and until we can successfully teach them to speak fluent English we're left guessing what their yawns, sneezes, pants and pawing can only mean. Lucky for you, a lot of your dog's body language has already been translated by dog-loving psychologists and depicted by Lili Chin below.

THE GOOD STUFF

Fly the slobbery skies

Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) in South Carolina has relaunched “Paws to Pet CAEnines", an in-terminal therapy dog program. The program hosts trained therapy dogs as a fun way to greet & destress traveling passengers. Breeds include Goldendoodles, Dachshund mixes, Labrador mixes & Boykin Spaniels, among others. This is one layover we wouldn't be upset about.

[LU]PITA PUP

A master of the Puppy Dog Eye, Pita has also perfected the art of subtle hints. At under a year, this seriously cute floof needed some puppy training and teamed up with WDU for some private one-on-one training. Now a certified Good Gurl, her pawrents, Elysa and George (and pretty much every other person she looks at) succumb to her relentless gaze. It's a problem, but not for Pita. Now if you don't mind, Pita has some reading (and subtle hints) to catch up on.

“Miss Pita is pure love with the right dash of sass. A stealthy stealer of eyeglasses, it's easy to forget you’re on your sixth pair of specs when she blinds you with her brilliance and beauty. She is pure joy on four legs and we love every single visit!” -- The WDU Team

 Dog Stuff Names We ❤️

A DOG NAMED DOUGLAS
& OTHER OLD-FASHIONED NAMES FOR A PUP

DOROTHY: A name that allows you to call your dog, "Dot," for short is a win in our book. Boss level: A golden named Dorothy would be a Golden Girl. 😎

ALFRED: This one comes with it's own catchy theme song for when you need your bodyguard & long-lost pal. The fact that the name means "elf counsel" in Old English should not be a deterrent. "...you can calllll meee Al (call me Al) ..."

OSWALD: If you can't tell we're all about the nicknames here & this one comes with no shortage of them: Oz, Ossie, Waldo. Yeah, we're here for it.

ASTRID: Scandinavian for "divine beauty," this one is definitely a standout in the crowd (and at one point reserved only for women of royalty). Slay, Queen.

MORTIMER: If your name is Rick this one might just be the dill to your Pickle. One of the least utilized names in the U.S, we can promise your pup will be the only Morty on the block. Only Ricks need apply.

LITERARY PAWS

Why we ❤️ it:

Bark Twain, Jayne Pawsten and Virginia Woof are all well-known paw-thers of classic novels. But how many famous doggos do you know who star in famous literature? Here's what we came up with:

NANA: The perfect nanny to the Darling children of Peter Pan.

LASSIE: Before the big screen, this Collie was the star of "Lassie Come Home," a children's novel so popular it was adapted into the classic television show.

TOTO: "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Toto." "No $h!t Sherlock."

CLIFFORD: The biggest reddest doggo on the block.

FANG: Harry Pawter and the Sorcerer's Bone, by J. K. Growling, obviously.
