DOG BLOG

Find Fluffy's inner Einstein

Have you ever thought about what your dog would be like if he or she were human? Would he be an old British man who drinks tea with his pinky up or the year-five frat bro still living in the house macking on the freshmen? Is your dog an Elle Woods or a Devil in Prada? Understanding your dog's personality can help you figure out their personal learning style, which is helpful when using Modern Dog Training techniques. We talk more about this in our blog post: You Can Teach an Old Dog New Tricks.

Just as they do in humans, intelligence types and learning styles vary from dog to dog and no one understands this more than Dr. Brian Hare, Associate Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University, and his fellow behavior geeks. They have created a personality assessment...for your dog. While it won't necessarily tell you how they'd take their tea or if they'd be a pleasure to work for, it will give you some insight into their personality and assign them a personality profile based on how they approach everyday life. It's called the Dognition Assessment, and it determines an individual dog’s cognition, personality and perspective on the world as they perceive it. It’s a science-based assessment using simple, fun games to learn how your dog’s brain works.

VET[TED]

You best watch your bac...teria

When we asked Dr. David Steele of Advanced Animal Care, "What is one warm-weather concern most dog owners don't think about?" he started speaking science. Almost immediately, our eyes glazed over and our brains started doing the Macarena. This is not a slight against Dr. Steele, this is just what happens when we see C-SPAN on the television...or when someone tries to explain health insurance or gives directions by saying, "Head West on..." Lucky for us, he's translated his science speak to English for the WDU Dog Blog this month (although he swears he was speaking English the entire time.) 🤔

LIONS & TIGERS & ALGAE, OH MY!

As it turns out, alligators aren't the only danger for doggos in the Lowcountry - cyanobacteria (aka Blue-Green algae) can be just a deadly. Find out how to spot the toxin, along with the signs and symptoms to keep an eye out for if your dog has come in contact with it.

FAST FACTS

Hey Siri how do you say 'woof' in Spanish?

A dog goes "woof" in English, but what about other languages?⁣⁣ Other cultures “hear” a dog’s bark differently and represent those barks in a different way. The words used to represent dog barks are based on onomatopoeia; the process by which we try to characterize a real-world sound using a word that sounds like it. While there is no universally accepted sound used to represent dog barks, it seems universal that dogs almost always speak twice: ruff-ruff, woof-woof in English, wan-wan in Japanese, etc. What's more, science has shown that virtually all dogs can understand the barks of other dogs, regardless of where they come from in the world.⁣⁣ Here are some ways a dog's bark is translated in other languages:

Armenian → haf-haf⁣⁣
Chinese-Mandarin → wang-wang
Dutch → blaf-blaf; waf-waf (small dogs) kef-kef (very small dogs)⁣⁣
French → wouaff-wouaff; vaf-vaf; jappe-jappe (small dog)⁣⁣
German → wuff-wuff; vow-vow⁣⁣; wau-wau
Greek → ghav-ghav⁣⁣⁣⁣
Hindi → bhow-bhow⁣⁣
Korean → mung-mung; wang-wang⁣⁣
Indonesian → guk-guk; gong-gong⁣⁣
Italian → bau-bau; arf-arf⁣⁣
Japanese → wan-wan; kian-kian⁣⁣
Lebanese → haw-haw⁣⁣
Norwegian → boff-boff; vov-vov⁣⁣
Polish → hau-hau⁣⁣
Portuguese → au-au⁣⁣
Romanian → ham-ham; hau-hau⁣⁣
Russian → guf-guf; hav-hav; tyav-tyav (small dogs)⁣⁣
Spanish → guau-guau; jau-jau⁣⁣
Swedish → voff-voff; vov-vov⁣⁣
Thai → hong-hong⁣⁣
Turkish → hev-hev; hav-hav⁣⁣
Vietnamese → gau-gau; wau-wau; ang-ang⁣⁣
Welsh → wff-wff⁣⁣

QUICK TIPS

Too hot for a trot

We recently found out that when's it's 80º outside, the pavement can reach a scalding 143º! And that's not even factoring in heat index and humidity. So when exactly is it too hot to trot with Spot?

☀️NOT ALL BREEDS ARE CREATED EQUAL: Not all breeds can regulate their body temperatures equally. Pugs, Boston Terriers, and French Bulldogs, are more prone to heatstroke than other breeds because of their breathing issues. Breeds with thick fur coats, such as Huskies or Malamutes, don't fair as well in warmer climates, while short-haired breeds like Greyhounds or Pit Bulls are better suited for warmer weather.

☀️THE FIVE-SECOND RULE: Walking dogs in high temperatures can lead to paw pad burns. To test whether or not the pavement is too hot place the back of your hand on the sidewalk. If it's too hot for you - it's too hot for them! The same thing applies for all you beach-goers.

☀️FOLLOW THE SIGNS: Keep a close eye on your dog when out in the heat and pay attention to the signs of overheating:

  • Excessive panting - It's normal for a dog to pant when he is warm. A dog who pants while hanging his head low, excessively drooling, walking slowly, and using his abdominal muscles to breathe is excessively panting.
  • Red, blue, purple, or gray gums - Dogs experiencing heat stroke will initially have bright red gums, but their gums will begin to change color as the heat stroke worsens.
  • Lethargy, disorientation, and uncoordinated walking are signs the dog may be experiencing the advanced stages of heat stroke. Collapsing, vomiting, or seizures are also signs of end-stage heat stroke.

☀️TAKE ACTION: Quick intervention is the key to helping a dog that is experiencing heat stroke:

  • Move the dog to a shady location that is well-ventilated.
  • Pour cool water over the dog, making sure to avoid the face.
  • Do not use cold water or ice water; this will cool a dog down too quickly and send him into shock.
  • Do not apply cool or wet towels to the dog. Towels trap heat against the dog’s body, worsening the heat stroke condition.
  • If available, place a fan near the dog so that air can move over his body. This will help the water on his body evaporate (which causes a reduction in the air temperature immediately next to the dog) and carry away excess heat.

☀️WHEN IN DOUBT CHART IT OUT: Use this handy chart below to help determine if it's too hot to take your dog for a walk.

NATIONAL DOG DAY - 26TH #NationalDogDay
🐶 National Dog Day is a day to recognize and celebrate our beloved four-legged friends. Owning a dog isn’t a requirement to celebrate National Dog Day -  anyone can show their love for pups everywhere on August 26. People can celebrate the holiday in different ways, such as checking to ensure their home is safe for dogs and donating blankets to a local animal shelter. #DYK The New York State Senate wrote National Dog Day into the state’s legislation in 2013?
