Separation Anxiety: How To Really Help Your Pup

What Does Work? Desensitization. In the case of Separation Anxiety Desensitization, this is a process in which your dog becomes less aroused, less sensitive to, and/or less fearful of alone time. As your dog becomes desensitized, they will be more comfortable, relaxed, confident and more capable of learning new associations and behaviors.

A very simple process that, when done carefully, and with attention to our dog’s body language responses and our timing, we can successfully leave them alone.

Fright Night πŸ‘» is Coming...

Should You Comfort Your Fearful Dog?

Think about a time where you’ve been afraid. If a friend or loved one comforted you at that time and told you everything would be okay, would that make you more afraid? Likely not. While behaviors can be reinforced, emotions can NOT. Fear is an involuntary and aversive emotional response. There are certainly things that we can do that could worsen their fear such as act anxious and scared ourselves, or do things that will make them afraid, but giving them some snuggle time and scratches during a scary situation isn’t a problem. Moral of the story…comfort your pup when they're scared!

From Furenemies to Furever Friends

Meet Brooks and Ripken (named for the hollowed Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame legends). They live in the same home and tension between them has been super high for a very long time. They couldn't be in the same room without squabbles starting and had been living their lives apart. This had taken extreme management on the part of their family and caused stress for everyone.

Watch how, using CC&D, we are able to change their very grumpy opinions about each other from "I see a nemesis!" to "Hey, wanna play?" (Now, if only we could get this method to work on some very grumpy humans...πŸ€”)

πŸ“Œ REMINDER: Management is a key piece in preventing or changing behavior.

#HashtagHolidays

Don't be the last one to post about your pups during this month's pet-related social media holiday: (yes, these are real!)

WORLD STATISTICS DAY -
 20
TH #StatisticsDay

πŸ“ˆ 70% of people sign their dogs' names on their holiday cards.

πŸ“ˆ Yawning is contagious - even for dogs. Human yawns can trigger dogs to yawn. It's 4x as likely to happen if it's from someone they know.

πŸ“ˆ Greyhounds can beat cheetahs in a race. While cheetahs can run twice as fast, they can only maintain that 70 mph speed for about thirty seconds. A  greyhound can maintain a 35 mph speed for about seven miles. "Slow & steady wins the race!"

REPTILE AWARENESS DAY - 21ST #ReptileAwarenessDay

🐒 Reptiles can make great, educational pets & can live harmoniously with pet dogs when introduced correctly. But not all reptile species are created equal (Think: Godzilla vs. Yoshi). Here are 3 Dog-Friendly Pet Lizards.
