Let's Talk: Separation Anxiety

Separation Anxiety is one of the most challenging behavioral issues to address, but please do not lose faith. Much progress and, most commonly, a remedy is possible. Separation Anxiety vs. Isolation Anxiety/Distress: Whether your dog suffers from Separation Anxiety or Isolation Distress, they present similarly to a human having a panic attack. Picture a claustrophobic person stuck in an MRI machine or elevator. Some dogs have lower levels of “distress” when left alone or separated from familiar people, but the dog’s fear is real, regardless, and needs to be addressed. Here we cover the differences between Separation Anxiety vs. Isolation Distress plus bust a few outdated myths.

Sorry, Brooks & Dunn, we couldn't resist. The sploot. AKA, the flying squirrel, frog dog, pancaking, Supermanning, furry turkey, turkey leg & the list goes on. Bet you didn't think you'd be learning dirty words in a WDU newsletter, did you? You thought correct! A sploot (demoed by the lovely, Winnie) involves kicking one or both legs behind the body. The movement is easy, natural & it can help them relax their legs & hips while stretching other muscles throughout their body (think: a full-body stretch). It's also a way for them to cool down quicker by pressing their bellies against the floor.

At first glance, Luring, Capturing and Shaping all sound like terms you might hear on a True Crime podcast or an episode of To Catch a Predator, but when it comes to Modern Methods of dog training these are three words we can't live without! Each method has its advantages, and its use will depend on what behavior you're trying to teach your dog, but all three are fun to use and of course, positive methods for dog training.

PETRA

Humans only get one life. They say cats get nine. For 3-year-old Petra, she is living her second (& best) life. As a retired racing dog, Petra came to live with her person, Stephanie, with no prior training. After going through Charm School Class, Stephanie wanted some additional support so she scheduled a quick 30-minute session. Stephanie had wisely used Capturing for Petra's "Down," but she was still having difficulty learning  "Sit." So, we decided to start Petra in her fabulous "Down" and Lure her up into her "Sit,"... & voila! Petra was a dazzling success!

You may recognize Petra from a few pixels up (yup, same greyhound!) Fact about Greyhounds - neither Sit nor Down, performed upon request (on cue), are easy for these pups given their body shape & preference to stand or curl up on a comfy couch. This is a HUGE accomplishment for any Greyhound.
